4 September
Mayor of London’s Sky Ride 2011

Part of the nationwide Sky Ride campaign, which aims to get one million more people riding a bike by 2013, the London Sky Ride is an opportunity to tackle the city’s streets without a car in sight. Register at the Sky Ride website. The event starts at 10am.

Literary events at Foyles Bookshop

Foyles’ autumn series of events kicks off in September with a number of interesting free events. The following is a sample of what’s on offer. The events are free, but you will need to reserve a place, as space is limited. Further details can be found on the Foyles website events page. Events start at 6.30pm.

6 September
Ten Years Later – Granta Launch

Join war reporter Janine di Giovanni and BBC Africa editor for the launch of Granta 116: Ten Years Later, which ponders how the world has changed in the ten years since 9/11.

13 September

Gianrico Carofiglio in conversation

Join Gianrico Carofiglio for the launch of his novel Temporary Perfections, the fourth in the Guido Guerrieri series of crime novels.

10-11 September
Thames Festival

This annual festival celebrates the river Thames, with events taking place between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge. Dubbed “London’s biggest end-of-summer party” by the Evening Standard, events include music, markets, a carnival procession and fireworks. The Thames Festival website has an updated listing.

The festival takes place on the weekend of 10-11 September, from 12 noon to 10pm.

17-18 September
Open House Weekend

Open House London is an annual architectural festival, with over 700 buildings of all kinds opening their doors to everyone – all for free. Some buildings require booking, but for the majority it is possible to just turn up on the day. Check the Open House website for full programme details.

17 September
The Great River Race 2011

Some 300 crews from all over the world race from London’s Docklands to Ham in Surrey in London’s colourful river marathon, the Great River Race. If you fancy having a go, closing date for entries is 30 August.

Starting cannon is at 1.45pm.
